Thinking About Humility

Tonight I shared about humility at youth group. Think through the questions below and come prepared to contribute your thoughts this Sunday night at Small Groups!

  • Key text: I Peter 5:5-6
  • How would you define humility?
  • What are the characteristics or words that come to mind when you hear the word humility?
  • How can you choose to exercise humility in your daily interactions? At home, school, work, etc.
  • What is the purpose of humility?
  • How does humility give God an opportunity to help you?
  • Describe a situation in which you exercised humility and how you believe God “lifted you up.”

Movie Review: "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed"

Today I went to the movie theater to see the new documentary Expelled featuring Ben Stein. It was very intriguing and fascinating. Ben Stein did a good job approaching the topic of evolution and intelligent design objectively and asking open, very good, and thought-provoking questions.

It was definitely a documentary; so don't go to the theater thinking you're going to see a "movie." Nevertheless, the content was fantastic. He compared what is happening in America to what happened in Nazi Germany, and that in and of itself was eye-opening and challenging. If nothing else, definitely get it when it comes out on DVD. I think it would be great to take an evening to watch and discuss the movie in a small group setting.

Visit the movie's website for a detailed description of the movie, the questions and issues it raises, and resources for taking the movie and it's message to a deeper level: http://www.expelledthemovie.com/

Thanks to those of you who participated in our church workday! This has generally not been a highly attended event for our youth, but I am challenging you, and me, that for the next one, we show up as an army of servants and blow everyone away! Let's do it!

So Proud of You!

Hey Planet Impact! I just want to let you all know that I was so proud of you tonight! Worship team, you are continuing to grow by leaps and bounds, and I appreciate all of your hard work. Tonight all of us joined together with the adults for the climax of our missions convention, and your passion for Jesus was contagious. I was so blessed to see you all participating during the worship by clapping your hands, lifting your hands to the Lord in worship, and singing. You paid attention, and some of you were even taking notes during the message. When the altar call was given, you were the first ones to respond to the invitation.

You really modeled I Timothy 4:12: "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example ...."

Can I be candid with you? Sometimes youth ministry can seem discouraging. One week everyone is full of life and fully participating in the services and we (the youth leaders) go home so excited and full of hope. The next week everyone seems dead, trying to worship is like trudging through quicksand, it seems like no one is paying attention during the message, and all we hear about are kids giving our leaders attitude. Our leaders go home vowing that on Thursday morning they are going to resign from working with students forever. That's just how it seems to go sometimes. I'm giving you a little window into the world of youth workers here.

But then there is a perspective that gives me great hope and inspiration. Tonight after service, Pastor Zarlengo was so excited and full of praise for the tremendous growth he is seeing in you, our youth! Since he only has opportunity to see you every few months, he has a different perspective from me and the regular youth leaders. He used this analogy: When you are working out regularly, you can feel like you are really not doing that much; that you're not making a different; and you can get frustrated and disillusioned because you're not really seeing the growth and change. However, if you have been working out regularly and suddenly run into a friend you haven't seen in a while, their reaction is, "Wow! You're really looking good! I can tell you've been working out. I can see the change!"

It was a blessing and a great reminder of exactly what I spoke about the other week when I talked about the invitation of Jesus to follow Him. Remember I mentioned that following Jesus is not about monuments, but footsteps. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. It's not a still photo, but a motion picture. As we look at things in perspective, I can see just how much you have grown, just how far you have come, just how much you have matured over the last few years, and I am super proud of you! Keep up the great work of following Jesus! I love you!

Who Cares About the Stupid Sheep?

Who cares about the stupid sheep? How ‘bout a dollar….nah, we live in a very wealthy area- the dollar doesn’t mean much more to us than does the sheep. Okay, okay…let’s change the Bible! Luke Chapter 15 “suppose one of you has a hundred ___100 dollar bills_____and looses one of them. Does he not leave the other ninety-nine and go find the one?” The idea of leaving some things behind to find one little thing that is lost has to do with value. A 100 dollar bill is just a small piece of paper. What do you see when you look at it? It is dirty, sometimes torn…but it is valuable. A sheep was valuable to the people in the Bible; yet we see no special value to a sheep. Imagine dropping everything you had to do to look for a sheep! A 100 dollar bill is valuable to us but how does God see it? To someone who made and owns everything- what is 100 dollars? So what is important to God? In Genesis we see God talking to Cain- someone we would say is not a follower of God. His life was dirty. He lied to God. He killed his brother. Yet God pursued him and put a mark of protection on him. People matter to God. See non-Christians might be justified in hating us because of how we treat them. But we are never, ever justified in hating them. They are created by God. God wants them to see his love through us. You see God chose us not because we were better than everyone else but for everyone else.

Quote: “We know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.”

Life Principle: Let’s purpose to pay the price of getting to know some non-Christians and telling them with our lives that they are valuable to God and matter to us.

Review: When Angels and Serpents Dance by P.O.D. by Tim Gibbons

P.O.D. is my absolute favorite band on the planet! Last week they released their new album which has been thumping non-stop in my car and on my computer ever since it arrived in the mail. It's sweet. Here's a review I just read on an e-newsletter I receive.
- Pastor Kevin

When Angels & Serpents Dance is the end product of fourteen years of musical experimentation by San Diego, CA-based P.O.D. The album encompasses the band’s hardcore/punk roots, the hip-hop style lyrics, and the reggae flavor that have marked their previous releases and made P.O.D a name with a solid, passionate fan base. The band’s sixth album follows up on multi-platinum releases The Fundamental Elements of Southtown and Satellite and shows the same evolution in style and high-energy that made those two albums hits.

When Angels & Serpents Dance features the band's reunited original line-up - Sonny (vocals), Wuv (drums), Traa (bass), and after a four year absence, Marcos (guitar) - and a return to some of their classic driving rock riffs. Marcos' in your face style is evident on the first single “Addicted”, as well as songs “Kalifor-eye-a”, “God Forbid” and “When Angels and Serpents Dance”. Additionally, the album has a well-balanced feel for the more serious side of life with “It Can’t Rain Everyday”, “The End of the World” (featuring a gospel choir), and “Tell Me Why”.

When Angels and Serpents Dance features a unique blend of blues, classical, in addition to rock guitar. The song “Roman Empire” is a sort of pseudo-overture for many of the riffs featured in greater detail on the rest of the album. “Rise Against” features an epic blues-styled solo amongst the reggae-style cadence of the song.

P.O.D. writes yet another chapter with When Angels & Serpents Dance and they show no sign of slowing down soon. The album is a further expression of the band’s unique sound fourteen years in the making. This album should have a place in your collection.

Serving is Fun!

Tonight was our annual missions banquet, and I was so proud of those of you who were working so hard and with such servants' hearts. What I loved most was that no one was grumbling and complaining. In fact, just the opposite was true! All of you were smiling and laughing and having a great time. Even my daughter was able to serve and be in on the fun. You are learning the joy of serving! I was looking forward to serving with you this year, but unfortunately the timing of my back surgery made it impossible for me to do so. Therefore, I did the next best thing I could. I grabbed my cane and hobbled over to say thank you and tell you how proud I was of all of you. I tried to get to each and every one of you individually. If I missed you, this one's for you: "THANK YOU! I APPRECIATE YOUR HARD WORK! YOU DID A GREAT JOB!" Thanks for being Jesus tonight! I love you guys! When I got home, believe it or not I was pretty sore from walking around, so I iced up, I took a hot bath, I loaded up on my la la drugs, and now I am about to fall asleep and go to la la land. Good night to all, and to all a good night.
Love,

How YOU Can Honor Sharon Stack

Yesterday I was able to use my walker and make it over to the church for Mrs. Sharon Stack's funeral. It was a beautiful service that honored her and celebrated her life. Both her brother and her best friend (Mrs. Debbie Abrahamsen) shared with tremendous clarity and love. Perhaps the two things I want all of us to take away from her life are the two qualities her brother shared.

First, she was always joyful. May all of us constantly be filled, refilled, and overflowing with the joy of the Lord. The Bible says, "The joy of the Lord is our strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

Second, she was a servant. Just as Sharon understood and followed Jesus, who did not come to this earth to be served, but to serve. May we all learn to serve the Lord with gladness and joy as Sharon did. (Psalm 100:2)

Let's honor Mrs. Stack by emulating her in these two wonderful, Christ-like qualities that she modeled for us during her days on this earth.

Weekly Devotional: "In All Things Grumble and Complain"

When I was in the hospital this past weekend recovering from my back surgery there were moments, indeed hours, when I was in excruciating pain. I was having severe, intense back spasms that would not let up, and no matter which way I turned I could not find comfort. There were a few thoughts that kept going through my mind.

  1. I am only 31 years old, why the heck did I need back surgery?

  2. Why are there Umpa Lumpas dancing around on the ceiling?

  3. If I squeeze and cringe any harder, my back isn't the only thing they're going to be wiping clean.

  4. The doctor forgot to remove the knife and sewed it inside of my back.

  5. It's a good thing he did or the next time he comes by to visit I might have an insatiable desire to use it on him.

  6. Jesus suffered pain much, much, much more severe than this when He was being beaten and when He was hanging on the cross for me.

  7. I love that verse in the Bible that says, "In all things scream, yell, grumble and complain for this is the will of God for you."

Now, if that last point doesn't quite sound like Bible, give yourself a pat on the back, because it's not. The actual verse says, "In all circumstances give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (I Thessalonians 5:18).

There were so many moments when those spasms just squeezed my back like an anaconda on a cat and I thought I was going to die, but I just kept saying [yes, out loud], "In all things give thanks, for this is the will of God." Sometimes nurses were in the room and would hear me say that and ask, "Pardon me?" I would say, "I am in a lot of pain right now, but I know that in all things I can give thanks because a life of thanksgiving is God's will for me. I have a ton of things to be thankful for." Sometimes the nurse would give me that look that said, "I am a Christian too," and sometimes the nurses would look at me like I was on drugs ... which I was. (No, not those kinds; the prescribed, legal kinds!)

So, what is it about thanks? How is giving thanks in ALL circumstances God's will for us? I'll let you think about, chew on (meditate), and wrestle with that question this week. Remember, no matter what you're going through - at home, at school, with your friends, at work, wherever - God's will for you in Christ Jesus is that you would give Him thanks. Now ask yourself the deeper questions as to why that is true.

Blessings,

PK

Special Service Tonight To Honor Mrs. Stack

Always wanting to be flexible and sensitive so we can follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, I have made a call to change our Power Up Service in order to have a night of prayer, worship, and an exhortation from Mr. John Contes.

My thanks to Dwayne for his flexibility. He was supposed to share his testimony and perform some of his songs, but understanding the circumstances, he humbly surrendered his time so we could pastor our students through this tragedy. We will have Dwayne minister in just a few weeks, and it will be powerful! Be sure to bring your unsaved friends to hear his incredible testimony about how Jesus saved him from a lfe of dealing drugs, gang bangin, and time in prison.

Locked Down in a Hospital bed

Students, Leaders, and Friends of Planet Impact,

It is 11:30pm and I am blogging from my hospital bed. So cool! I went into surgery today at about 1:30. It was a 3 hour procedure which I remember nothing about. The first thing I heard when I woke up was my surgeon telling me that everything went great. As soon as I came to I instantly noticed a remarkable change in my body. Not only did my lower back feel better, but also my legs, my shoulders, and even my neck pain is gone! Thank You Lord! Amazing how one pinched nerve can cause so much pain throughout the body.

I'm sore where the incision was, and the muscles are sore, but it's tolerable. The meds have worn off quite a bit now, but I have not hit the morphine drip yet at all. The nurse is surprised that I haven't. Here's the best way I can describe it: The pain that was once inside of my lower back is now on the outside.

Ady and the girls were there when I woke up. As you can imagine, the girls were nervous and concerned seeing me with wires and tubes all over me and in me. I made some jokes to try and put them at ease, but my oldest daughter (as mentioned in my blog the other day), is very caring and sensitive, and she teared up a few times. After moving me to my room I again assured her that I was OK and asked her why she was crying. She said, "I don't want you to die." How sweet and innocent! I called her over to myself, told her I had something to tell her, then I keeled over and pretended I was dead. No, just kidding! I didn't do that! I'm sick, but I'm not that sick! April Fools! Ha Ha! Please continue to pray for my healing, and for my family as they walk through this with me.

Much Love,
PK
